She's Gone

Sesha Feb 04, 2007 01:14 AM

Tonight I came home, checked on my Dumeril's boa, and she wasn't acting right. I picked her up and she appeared to be convulsing. After a few minutes, she stopped moving. She didn't respond to anything and wasn't breathing.

The last visit I had with the vet, there was talk of her improving and how everything would be alright. I guess I'll have to tell him how things went differently.

That snake and I have had the most awful of luck. She's lost by UPS for a week, a hygrometer that is defective all this time, she develops a respiratory infection, and not even the vet could save her.

It's a terrible feeling to fight for so long and so hard, only to lose. Makes a person wonder why they even tried. I can't help but to think of all the things I was looking forward to. She was such a calm snake. Never tried to bite anyone (except the vet).

I guess I wasn't ready to raise up a boa. Maybe later on, but for now, all I can think about is how much I wish that cage wasn't there.

Sad deal to loose an animal, sorry for your loss.
Take what you have learned and get that cage filled ASAP.
Dont soak on the "what if's" just move forward.

Best Of Luck

I am very sorry for your loss. Maybe if/when you are ready for another snake you could start with a subadult or even adult. I bought all three of my dumerils as adults and they are quite sweet, and well established. Hatchlings often are more work, becuase they are more sensitive. Although, I would recommend having the cage perfected before you get the animal...it makes it easier on everyone!

Take care!

Sorry to hear that. I just lost my female rosy yesterday, in unexplained circumstances when I thought she was fine. Always sucks to lose a pet, even if they don't carry *quite* the same emotional attachment as a dog or cat. Good luck,

BTW I don't know about you, but I definitely have the same deep emotional attachment to my snakes as to my dog.

So sorry for your loss. I was there just recently myself but with a seemingly healthy animal. Keep up the spirits and don't be too discouraged. Our thoughts are with you.

today I cry for one lost.

My job is to assist God's creatures.
I was born with the drive to fulfill their needs.
I take in helpless, unwanted, homeless creatures
without planning or sleection.
I have bought dog food with my last dime.
I have patted a mangy head with a bare hand.
I have hugged someone vicious and afraid.
I have fallen in love a thousand times.
And I have cried into the fur of a lifeless body
too many times to count.
I have Animal Friends and friends who have animal friends.
I don't often use the word "pet".
I notice those lost at the road side
and my heart aches.
I will hand raise a field mouse
and make friends with a vulture.
I know of no creature unworthy of my time.
I want to live forever if there aren't animals in Heaven,
but I believe there are.
Why would God make something so perfect
and leave it behind?
Some may think we are master of the animals,
but the animals have mastered themselves...
something people still haven't learned.
War and abuse make me hurt for the world,
but a rescue that makes the news gives me hope for mankind.
We are a quiet but determined army
and we are making a difference every day.
There is nothing more necessary than warming an orphan,
nothing more rewarding than saving a life,
no higher recognition than watching them thrive.
There is no greater joy than seeing a baby play
who, only days ago, was too weak to eat.
By the love of those who I've been privileged to rescue,
I have been rescued.
I know what true unconditional love really is,
for I've seen it shining in the eyes of so many,
grateful for so little.
I am an Animal Rescuer.
My work is never done.
My home is never quiet.
My wallet is always empty,
but my heart is always full.

We all know what it is like to lose an animal and it is hard to put into words how sorry I am for your loss. Know you have tried and put more effort into saving that animal than many animal owners out there. Dont give up because of your loss, instead bring a new friend into your home that you can love and take care of, another friend to fill the void in your heart.

I know it seems like the last thing you want to do right now, but you should get another right now. Not to replace the one you lost but to get over your fear and concerns of your ability to care for a boa. You seem to be a very responsible keeper and just experienced a case of multiple mishaps causing her demise.

Get another boa you will be happy you did.
