Filming Questions

I realize this is a photograhy forum however I could not find one for film/documentary discussion. I am relatively new to filming and I have a few questions regarding the quality/appearance of the film/documentary.

Well firstly what is it called? Movies have that 'movie' look/quality to them, and nature documentaries on Discovery Channel have that 'documentary' type look/quality. What are those different looks refered to as?

Anyone who could offer some answers would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. Do you get better film quality when using digital camcorders or regular film camcorders? Or are they basically the same?
