...keep everything that comes in contact with those wild-caught balls away from the rest of your critters. Thought you were savin' some money on those, eh? If you could do it again, I bet you'd get a cb.

raisnok Feb 05, 2007 08:44 PM

well i didnt pay anything for them, a friend was moving out of state and had more ball pythons that she could handle so she gave me these 2 for buying a few others from her, one of which was my het pied male.

HiYa Raisnok!

Maybe I can help you with your non-feeding WC balls? I succeeded with two WC adults.

First get stool samples done - then have 'em wormed/treated for whatever they got. Watch out for ticks - WC BPs are often infested with these hideous bloodsuckers.

Second keep em warm - around 5 deg F warmer than corns. They are from tropical African and like it hot.

Third give 'em a cool, dark secure hide. This is part of their hunting strategy (ambush).

Fourth - privacy - BPs look placid and stuporous, but they aren't. Mine were very concious of anything going on around them and (at first) would refuse food if they saw the slighest movement. I took to hanging a light cotton handkerchief in front of their cages. Today, you could go with a translucent tub.

Last but not least GERBILS! These are the natural prey of BPS, and my WCs were almost hard-wired to geebees.

My recipee was to to start with live hoppers, usually in early spring after the snakes had done their annual winter fast. If they don't eat in a an hour or so put the hoppers back with Mama, and try again later. Once they get started on hoppers, you can move up to larger sizes. Mine would eventually take prekilled and F/T gerbils without trouble.

Gerbils don't breed as fast as mice but they get bigger and don't stink so much. They aren't as mean as hamsters, and they are cuter than rats. They are an excellent food source - my BPs got fat and sassy on them. I started with one breeding pair, which evnetually produced more gerbils than 3 adult BPs could consume.

Some drawbacks of gerbees: They are cute.
Don't keep more than a pair of breeders in one cage - when overcrowded they will kill their pups.

The furry skin on their tails is very loosely attached. If you use the swing-&-smack killing method, you may find youself holding a tantalizing whisp of gerbil fur, while your now naked-tailed gerbil scampers off beneath the nearest heavy piece of furniture.

Super gerbees - are so fast no BP can catch them - kill these!

Fainting gerbs - no kidding! These fall over dead at the hint of danger - only to revive when the danger is past! BPs get confused by this behavior - mine always keyed on movement, esp. closeup. A fainted gerbil was an ignored gerbil.

Good Luck!

John D.

they have been tested, treated and treated for ticks........

since all of that they have been eating, just kind of like they limit how much they eat....

they are picking up weight....just not fast enough for me .

Well cool!

As long as they are eating its all good.

Mine didn't really eat very often, but never appeared unhealthy.

Sorry about the tutorial - it was late and I got carried away.

Good Luck and Enjoy
