water bowl issue

burmmania Feb 04, 2007 11:55 AM

Just curious what you guys use for anchoring your water bowls? I tried hot glueing mine for a change and still had three tipped before I left the room. My snakes love the little space between the bottom of the bowl and the wall, so they try to squeeze in there and end up tipping it. Its getting annoying as I have at least a few of them spilled every day! Thanks in advance.

I have seen many setups for water bowls. Large (or small) dog/cat dishes with the wide bases so they are harder to tip over. Ceramic bowls (I use these for my older snakes, as they have learned how to tip the plastic dog/cat dishes and now are flipping these ones over LOL too, so plan on changing again...at least I don't have to mist the cages as much now LOL).

Other setups I have seen people use are boards with dish size holes cut in and the dish put into the holes to keep them secure. Some use the PVC pipe ends...err, basically the cap thing you put at an end of a open pipe to close it. I also think some have just clued them down.

I use a glass pie plate with my snake. It's low enough that I can bury it down flat in the substrate so it works like a pond. If you kept it far enough out from the edge of the enclosure, your snake might not be able to get enough leverage to tip it over. Plus, it's shallow enough that she can climb in and out without tipping it, and it's easy to clean.

My wife is always on the look out for good water dishes, for either adults or babies. I have found, for babies, the best I have seen for $1 each is at Pier One, little off white ribbed dishes that are used for dip or sauces or something. The key is to make the mouth the same size or smaller than the bottom of the dish. Using these, I have had 0 spills. For adults, I use small dog bowles or large plastic multipurpose bowls.

Plexiglass and silicone sealer. Cut a stip of plexi and silicone it in a corner at an angle. Makes it hard to clean but they can't tip the sucker.

I never have water bowl tipping problems... have read that if they are trying to burrow under it, it's for security reasons ...are both of your hides small and snugg enough for the security they need???
