A local breeder keeps florida box turtles outdoors all year round. He has a small shelter that is currogated plastic set on top of cinder blocks or bricks, under which he stuffs it full of mulch and leaves in the fall. The boxies hibernate in their and do just fine.

A person I once communicated with regularly keeps gulf coast box turtles outdoors year round in Massachusets, far beyond what I would consider doing, but proof they could do well in the North Carolina climate, which is really not far from their natural range.
