Color Phase Question

KevinM Feb 04, 2007 02:21 PM

I am curious about my Saharan/Nigerian Uro. It is a red phased animal. When we bought it, it was being sold with yellow phase Saharan/Nigerian uros as well. I am assuming they are the same animal (Saharan = geyri), but can can you breed the yellow to red phase? Or, are they actually seperate subspecies?? Just wondering out loud LOL!!!

There are no U geyri subspecies. They are a species all to
themselves. The difference in the color phase is just that.
Some are yellow and some are orange phase. Of course
both color phases tend to vary as to their brightness and
shades of orange or yellow. Males tend to be brighter
than the females and more often than not, can display
more darker/bolder facial, neck as well as ventral striping.

I have a nice yellow male in my breeding group who only
wants to court an orange female. I will let them breed (with
my blessing ... lol). Although I've never crossed them by color
phase before, I am anxious to see the difference in any of the
color in the offspring. I've heard this produces a nice
mixture so If I'm successful and they eventually produce
offspring, I will be happy to share my findings.

Below is the prospective pair in question.

Yes i agree it's just that colors! Same species! But different colors! Good luck!

Hi John, good luck with the pairing. I wonder if you will get both phases in the clutch. Also, would you get both phases if you bred like color phases together? Just curious. Let us know how it goes!!!

You can cross the colour phases. I bred my beautiful yellow male to my equally beautiful pumpkin orange female. The results were very interesting. The offspring were mostly yellow with the exception of a couple that were bi coloured(exibiting both orange and yellow).

Thanks for the input. That is exactly what I was wondering about. The color of the offspring. Sounds like you can get both phases as well as a blend of colors when two phases breed.
