humid hut-always in it?

crazydragon Feb 04, 2007 04:12 PM

We have our gecko for about a month now. Scully is always in his humid hut,he has never used his cave dwelling! Is this a good thing for him to be in there, its a plastic clear) cole slaw container. It has paper towels in it, we spray it twice a day to keep it moist. We tried eco-earth but he didn't like it, so we switch back to paper towells. It sits to the left of his tank. His UTH is on the right side. The temp of the tank is 90 degrees. We also use a red light on the tank to help keep the temps. at 90. His substrat is linoleum floor squares. He eats gut loaded crickets(dusted)and has grown 3/4 of an inch so far.Not too crazy on mealie worms yet.Is it o.k. for him to always be in his humid hut? I've read all the posts about humid huts, just wanted to make sure. Thanks for your help!

Yea, i am sure he does come out at night while your sleeping i have 6 leos and my one female stays in her hide as well all day and only comes out at night (they are nocturnal animals) so i guess that's a good reason. Haha I also have a funny girl who loves to stand in her water dish i am always misting her water dish because i don't want her to fall asleep in the dish and drowned. Anyways.....Yes it's ok sometimes you can bug him and pull him out and play a bit and when you put him back in put on opposite side of the tank and that way he will have no choice but to explore a bit.

If he is too hot, he may be using the moisture of the hide to cool down a bit. I hope 90 isn't the temperature of the entire cage, that should just be in a small area for basking. Try turning off the light, and just using the UTH for a while. If he comes out then, you'll know it was because he was too hot.
