lethargy & trembling

Buffysmom Feb 04, 2007 08:21 PM

My older female (not sure how old, I bought her as a retired breeder) was lethargic the other day & today she was trembling- I saw her climbing her vine & her legs were shaking. I'm taking her to the vet tomorrow, but I'm wondering if anyone has any idea what may be wrong.

Trembling in geckos is sometimes a sign of low calcium/MBD, so the trip to the vet is a very good plan. Given that MBD is a possibility, try to be extra careful handling and transporting her, as if it is MBD, her bones will be fragile. My bet is that after the vet trip, you post here saying that the vet gave her a calcium shot and/or some sort of supplement. Here's hoping you caught it soon enough, and good luck. Let us know how it turns out.

I can almost guarantee that she had a calcium crash.

Thank you. I have really been trying to boost the calcium. I have always fed them baby food mixed w/ CGD & calcium, specifically because I know at least one of my girls is breeding.
I will let you know what happens at the vet. Thanks again.

Well, I think I can guess what the vet will/should tell you. If she's breeding you shouldn't be feeding the babyfood. Wean her off the mixture and she should be straight up CGD. I can't speak to the extra calcium, as supposedly CGD has enough for breeding females, but offering it on the side couldn't hurt. I would be concerned about mixing it in simply because how would I know enough is enough or too much? So, switch her to CGD (my adult doesn't even her food mixed anymore, she refuses CGD mixed with babyfood now and will only eat CGD straight up with water. Weird.) You can also supplement with calcium dusted crickets. Read the label of CGD, it says only mix with babyfood until established. You are most likely throwing off the balance of other minerals and vitamins in her body by diluting the CGD.

Have you been monitoring the calcium deposits in her mouth? I wouldn't risk checking her right now, but it is a good thing to check on your other rhacs. Calcium crashing is easy to prevent and it worries me that your are having this problem and trying to breed. Do you have a copy of the "complete guide to rhacs"? I would highly suggest it. I'm hoping for the best for her, but I would highly suggest you not continue to breed her until you have updated your husbandry practices. Good luck.

As guessed, the vet suspects low calcium, but feels it's more likely a result of her past life as a breeder for a store, rather than current husbandry practices. Her calcium stores in her mouth look sufficient, however the vet says if she didn't have enough during her peak breading years, it could be catching up to her now. She gave me calcionate syrup w/ dosing of a drop, twice a day. She tried to do bloodwork to ensure that we're treating the right thing, but couldn't get any blood from my little gal.
Unfortunately, as she was an adult when I got her, I have no idea what her age is, or how her previous husbandry was.
With all due respect to the last poster, my cresties won't eat straight CGD & I don't want to change that. I mix in CGD & extra calcium with their food. I don't feel that cresties NEED to be raised on CGD, it's just one option for their feeding, not the only "right" one.
Thank you all for the help.
