Inflating egg?

j3nnay Feb 05, 2007 10:15 AM

Sooo my clutch from December is on day 51 of incubating. Temperatures have been around 88 degrees, give or take a degree.
This is what they looked like about a week ago:
Note! The eggs were with the mom for almost a week after they were laid - and so the top two dimpled horribly because I simply couldn't keep the humidity high enough. The slug is also still pretty firmly attached so I've left it there.

And this is the clutch as of this morning:
(gawd the slug is nassssty)

Notice anything about that egg on the left? It's INFLATED! It started doing that a couple days ago and today the dent was totally gone.
Not only that but I'm pretty close to when hatching should occur and the egg on the right hasn't dimpled at all.

Anyone have any suggestions on what might be going on? I'm totally at a loss at this point. From what I read the eggs are supposed to start dimpling at around three weeks before hatching, not start inflating!

First the invisible ovulation, then the female doesn't act gravid until the final week, then she lays DURING finals week, and now this! This clutch is going to drive me nuts!

take a mini maglight flashlight or any other small light and with the lights off candle the eggs .You should be able to see live snakes.just in case you have not done this before hold the light against the egg on one side or the other.Terry

Tried, we don't have any flashlights small enough. The general rule about stuff around here seems to be the bigger the better!

We have had many eggs never dimple and still hatch right along side those that did. Keep an eye on it if the others start to hatch and that one still hasnt you can always put a small slit in it. Keep us updated, and good luck
