Milk Snake VS. Corn Snake

Terrible_one Feb 05, 2007 11:29 AM

Hey guys I already did some research and owned reptiles when I was a kid but I did have some more questions hopefully you guys can chime in. When I was little I had a ball python (handled it a lot and it didnt mind, but I dont really want another) Ive had a Lepoard Gecko that didnt like being handled and I became sick and had to sell it. Now I want a sanke again. Rather a Milk or a corn. Anyway enough with the background..heres my questioons

I really want a Milk becuase quite frankly I think they are beatiful. The bright yellow, black, red ones with the black heads are awsome looking! I know Corns come in all different colors and patterns is their a corn that looks like a milk?

I want to be able to have the snake out just chillen with me on my computer desk or bed. Cant bite and must be very friendly. Which would be better in that catogorey? Also which ones are smaller? I dont want anything to big.

I dont really want to get it at petco or anything..ill look around some mom and pop shops but im sure im not going to find one I really like...Who is a good breeder online thay can sell me a healthy, friendly corn or milk snake.

Thats it for now...any help is appreciated!

Although there's a "milk snake" phase of corn snake, they really don't look much like the banded milks which are popular in the pet trade (although they somewhat resemble the blotched Eastern Milk Snake).

There is a tremendous amount of variation in the size and disposition of the twenty-something subspecies of milk snakes, so you cannot use the term "milk snake" and expect accurate generalizations as far as their suitability as a pet. They vary in size from six foot Honduran and Black Milks, to Scarlet Kingsnakes (which are actually milk snakes) that average 20 inches in length.

They vary is disposition as well. Pueblans never seem to tame down; while Hondurans start off as frantic and unhandleable babies, but eventually calm down as they age. Most milk snake keepers rank Nelson's, Sinaloans, and Mexican Milks as the best pet milks for beginners. These are as tame and easy to keep as corn snakes, and reach the same adult size (on average) as corns. The albino Nelson's is especially beautiful.

Below is one of my female breeders.

Well if it were between a milk and a cornsnake I'd choose a cornsnake. So many different varieties and colors. I got mine from MoReptiles on-line. Shipped very nicely with no problems. E-mailed the breeder with questions which they promptly replied to. Check them out. They have a really nice photo gallery.

As far as having them out and expecting them to chill - not likely. There active and don't stay still much. At least the one I have. Maybe when it gets older it will sit still better. If I just want to hang out I get the ball python out. These guys are great at hangin out.

You can post this question on the milk forum as well, if you have not already.
Yes, milks are very pretty. They are also very fidgety, in my experience. They do not tolerate handling as well as corns. And when milk snakes bite, they CHEW. They do not strike and let go. MOST corns do not bite. Some people say they have some evil corns, but I have 60 snakes and none have been evil. Corn snakes are more mellow and you have a better chance of finding one that will chill with you. Corns come in an amazing array of colors. You wont really find one that is three or four colors on one snake, though. Although, pink and green snows have white, with a hint of green and pink.
There is a Milk Snake phase of corn, but it just means they have bands.
I hope this helps

You could always split the difference and go with a Sina-corn, unless you're one of those folks dead set against hybridization. Personally, I think they look pretty cool and wouldn't mind having one at some point! Search "sinacorn" in the galleries and a few pictures will pop up.

I have a Jalisco Milk yearling and he hasn't settled down any yet. Mine still musks me all the time (doesn't bite though). For a calm snake, get a corn (still needs supervision as it WILL try to escape, not just "chill with you" on your computer). For a gorgeous snake, go for a milk.

Good luck,

Walt
