IBD in balls

MizM Feb 05, 2007 12:33 PM

Greetings all. I don't post often, but I have some questions that I can't find answers to regarding IBD.

History; I have a breeding pair of red-tails and a male ball. All were rescues from neglectful homes. The ball was being fed and watered... period. The female red-tail was taken from a home where she had no heat whatsoever, was fed and watered occasionally. She had moderate respiratory infection, which I treated and cured with Baytril injections. The male red-tail was given to me by my local pet store, they had recued, rehydrated and fed him until healthy. The boas are aparently happy, healthy and are expecting a litter this spring.

Unfortunately, the ball is now exhibiting symptoms of IBD. The only exception is that he is still voraciously hungry, but bites himself trying to get to the prey. I feed pre-killed thawed mice, yesterday, I held it for him and helped him get it down. Our only reptile vet is about 40 miles away... but this is a disease that I'm simply not prepared for.

Is it possible to get a positive diagnosis on this disease yet?
I read an article about a Southern California specialty reptile breeder distributing IBD infected boids. Is it possible that I have shopped there? Can someone tell me which one it is?
How can I tell if my ball is suffering?
I will not hesitate to euthanize, but don't want to put him down needlessly. Any encouraging words?

Thanks much!

I know a gentleman that recently lost an animal that exhibited symptoms of IBD. He sent off for a necropsy and the results were a bacterial infection, not IBD. Might want to see that vet. Good luck.

Yes, of course you are right, I think I'm reeeely paranoid after seeing him writhing around. AND, he is not exhibiting any signs of respiratory infection or mouth rot. This morning, he had a funny kind of muscle spasm.... weird. Well, off to call the vet! (Thanks!)
