Hello all,

I've been corresponding with Eve a little bit. Ran across her site when I was researching chuckwallas and now I just have to get some Collareds! I've been raising lizards for about 17 years now and I love them, as does my wife who shares my passion.

The third week of this month, I'll be going to a reptile show in Orlando. I hope to find some collareds there unless one of you has a deal I can't refuse on a CB animal. So right now, I'm just counting the days and thinking about my setup.

Right now, I have one 6-year old bearded dragon in a 75-gallon tank. I also have an unoccupied 40-gallon tank. I'm trying to decide whether it would make sense to put some Collards in with the bearded (75 gallon), or would they fight? Or worse, would the bearded eat the collards? And would getting an adult make a difference in terms of whether they end up as a snack.

Otherwise, I'm looking at putting them in the 40-gallon.

Still a third option is to custom build something. I'm moderately handy with wood work and have the tools, but my quality of work isn't really that good. Maybe I could start by buying a piece of used furniture to begin with or something.

Anyway, does anyone have any information or advice? Also, does anyone have any direct knowledge that there will be collareds available at the Orlando show? At this time of year, how old will the CB animals likely be?

Thanks for any and all information.

Steve

Your Beardie would eat the Collareds in a heart beat, so my recommendation is to place the Collareds in the 40 gallon tank. W.Wells who posts here stated in a previous post that he has his the majority of his collareds in 40 gallon terrariums with no issue's arising.

I have a pair of collared, Bonnie and Clyde in a 60 gallon tank and Bugsy in quarantine in a 20 gallon, will upgrade as I've found a source that sells reliable Collareds.

***Thanks for the info. I won't mix the two species. Did you say that you've found a source that sells collards? Where? e-mail me at sreecy(at)comcast(dot)net

Thanks for the welcome. I can be chatty, so I'm sure we'll "talk". I like the idea about the book. Love to be able to provide a picture or something...but first I gotta get a collard!

Hey there!

So, you're going to go to the Orlando show. I'm down in Miami, so we go to as many of the Florida show as we can, and I can tell you that the only show I ever saw collareds at was last Tampa show, and that was a fluke. The guy I got em from had 4 that he got from a breeder friend in Roswell, NM, just cuz, and he was selling them real cheap, I think I got Roz and Hurley for $30 a piece. But anyway, all that aside, the guy is located in Sunrise, FL by Ft Laud, and if you don't have any luck in Orlando he may know how to obtain them and I can get his name for you.

Seems like all I ever see at these expos are snakes. Lizards it's hit or miss; the last Tampa show had a few breeders with quite a selection of lizards, but the show before that wasn't as good, and the "big crazy Daytona show" last August was terrible for lizards. Mostly snakes. Typical selection of bearded dragons and geckos, but nothing... unique, ya know?

Anyway, I digress. If you have the opportunity, there's a Tampa show March 10-11th and IMHO it's one of the better ones, I think they'll have far more than Orlando. Everything I have comes from a Tampa expo, so I'll probably be making posts in mid march about my new whatever I come home with, lol.

The 40 is great for a few collareds, BTW, that's what I keep mine in, but I don't know if putting them with the beardie would be a good idea. I'm sure I don't have to tell you that the beardies are native to Australia, nowhere near the southwest United states where the collareds hang. I'm pretty sure beardies aren't lizard eaters, I thought they were insectivores/herbivores, collareds will eat lizards but obviously only what's smaller than em. You'd have better luck with leopard lizards and collards coexisting (same size of course) since they share the same habitat.

Yadda yadda yadda, etc, I better shut up now, my boyfriend keeps asking me when dinner is. God knows I'm the only one who speaks the language of the stove. Let me know if you plan on hitting the Tampa show, I may or may not make it to orlando this ime, but I'll always make time for tampa.

Hey there!

****Back at ya!

So, you're going to go to the Orlando show. I'm down in Miami, so we go to as many of the Florida show as we can, and I can tell you that the only show I ever saw collareds at was last Tampa show, and that was a fluke. ****That is discouraging. Tonight I went shopping and found a really neat rolling table and a pretty big tank at Goodwill (bigger than I had). The tank is looks like lucite, so I think it will help me keep the temps up. I thought I was going to wait to get some collareds, and now your news... I'm probably about to post here asking if anyone knows where I can get some that aren't totally wild. I'd appreciate any leads, including the contact info to the guy in sunrise. FWIW, I vaguely remember seeing collareds at the last show I went to, which was like 7 years ago.

***I hate that. I'm 100% a lizard man. I don't hate snakes, or have a phobia about them or anything, I just like the lizards cause I think they are cuter. Who knows...maybe someday I'll set up at one of those shows just to help out people like us.

***Wish there was a way to get the lists of the vendors so you could ask them to bring them along. Many times, they have limited table space so they only bring what is most profitable...

The 40 is great for a few collareds, BTW, that's what I keep mine in, but I don't know if putting them with the beardie would be a good idea.

*** Yeah, the other folks here shut that idea down. Gonna put some in my new lucite tank (If I can find any), and then build something really decorative for the living room out of an old chest of drawers...

Thanks for the welcome,

Steve

I'm back!

For the Orlando show, you may be able to request a vendor list here: http://www.repticon.com/contacts/
For the Tampa show, this is the vendor list: http://www.gilaproductions.com/tpa/exh.html

The man in Sunrise that I purchased the collareds thru at the last Tampa show runs a store located in Sunrise called East Coast Reptiles and will be at the next Tampa show. If you get in touch with him, he can most likely give you the name of the breeder in Roswell, NM; I cannot remember the name, the more I try the further I get.

My boyfriend likes to keep snakes, and I completely agree... no phobias, no problems with snakes, i like em just fine, but they sure don't have the personality a lizard has. Plus lizards are cooler to watch run than watch a snake slither around. Unfortunately these shows seem to cater to the snake people, and it seems that the snakes can be bred and kept so easily, every Tom, Dick, and Harry does it. I was in heaven at the White Plains, NY show in early January just because of the sheer variety of lizards, but I was warned (correctly warned) by my breeder friend in NJ to avoid buying anything there- they'd all be leftovers from that year's turnout, and most of the breeders were traveling 3 hours from the DE show to the NY show without really keeping the animals as warm as they ought to be. There was a guy tryin to sell a pair of really skinny lookin brown basilisks for $10. I almost walked out with them just cuz I felt terrible leaving them almost certainly to die.
Holy crap I get easily sidetracked; anyway...

You'll definately find some collareds one way or another. Seems I can't find them until I need one, then miraculously they come around. That'd look really cool with a chest of drawers as the base, plus it'll give you a great place to stash all your lizard keepin supplies!

keep us posted,
~Tiff

Hey Buddy, glad you decided to join us nice to have you and your wife with us. I enjoyed our talks and was happy to hear you guys are getting some collareds in a few weeks.
You won't be sorry, everyone will tell you they are really neat lil lizards. So many colors, patterns, species to choose from.

Many of us will have some youngsters availble this spring if you are still looking, or want certain species/ colors.. whatever. You can contact people through email, we are not allowed to talk sales, deals, free stuff , here .

I hope you can find some sooner, and see how awesome they are
The 40 breeder tank would be great for a trio or (male and a few females) They use every inch.

As far as puttting them with your beardie, NO, don't do it. Like Boost said the beardies would eat the collareds, or hurt them. Also beardies carry coccidia , just the different parasite thing tossing 2 different species together is not healthy.

Well I'm happy ya showed up, and will be talking with you guys, theres alot of super COOl people here, very nice, we have a real friendly and sometimes goofy forum, LOL And we love photos, so make sure you get your camera ready after you get your collareds

You can post some pics of your beardie now if ya have some we enjoy all critter pics, whenever you want to post any critters that are not collareds just put O/T in your subject so we know it's "OFF TOPIC" (but will enjoy them just the same)

Enjoy the Forum

Eve,

Thanks for the welcome to the forum. I kinda figured that it was taboo to do transactions here. Seen similar stuff on Chameleon forums. My thought is that there doesn't appear to be a lot of folks captive breeding the collards, so this is my best bet for finding one unless I get some WCs and breed my own. FWIW, I think I found two WCs after an exhaustive search, but WC is definitely not my preference...can they even be tamed down? Anyway, I hope ya'll breeders will give periodic "birth announcements" when they happen.

And yes, this is definitely a husband and wife endeavor. My first fascination with lizards was when I was 11 years old doing door to door sales in the 1970s (geez I'm old) and I met a college kid with an adult, dog tame, iguana. Back then, it was extremely unusual for anyone to have an iguana of that size for a pet and I was floored. Usually, when a young boy is impressed with something that strongly at that age, whether it be a certain type of animal, or sportscar, etc., it makes a life-long impression. I never forgot about it, and used to kid my family about how I wanted an iguana some day and I'd name it Tujauna. Anyway, at the tail end of college, when I was still only dating my wife, my sister gave me an Ig for Christmas about 17 years ago, and then my interest exploded from there. The wonderful thing is that my wife is an animal lover, and she truly did fall in love with lizards too. Not just doing it because I did, but she really "gets it".

After setting lizards aside somewhat and selling them off due to the pressures of having babies and toddlers, we're just starting back into them again. We have one 6-year old holdover bearded dragon, and two Ambanja Blue Bar panther chameleons purchased a few weeks ago which we will be breeding when they are old enough. We recently lost our 13-year old iguana, and discussions of what to do with his cage is what lit the fire for us again. Now its a family affair...our kids just love the chameleons...they come in to tell them good night before bed...I think they'll flip over something more active...

Yeah, know what ya mean about lovin critters at a young age and sticking to them all your life It's real special you and your wife are in this together. My hubby likes all my lizards, respects everything I do, which is great, but I'm in it alone.

I wish I had some youngsters for you but none for sale now. I always announce the new arrivals, and parents to be, as well as who is old enough to be in daycare waiting to go to new homes LOL. Gosh they are so cute ( the lil ones the big ones are just gorgeous.

Best wishes with the ambanja blue bar pair have to show some pics of them too! My Tamatave female is starting to sit on a low branch near the bottom of the cage, almost ready to lay really EGGciting .

You should also pop in the chameleon forum. I hear the moderator is pretty cool, hahahahhaaa, you also like chuckwallas,(they have a COOL moderator too, hehehheee, stop by there , we are real layed back over there,
