Rack Design Questions

fatjayhawk Feb 05, 2007 04:52 PM

I realize that some of these questions may repeat responses that I've already seen in this forum but any responses will be useful.

1. In terms of heat what are the pros/cons of heat tape v. the heat cord?
2. In using the heat tape, are there recommended methods of ensuring it won't be damaged by plastic tubs being pulled in and out over it.
3. Preferences for tubs. I'm mostly using this for a variety of kings. Most people seem to prefer a couple of common brands. I've looked at a number including rubbermaid products. Is preference made mostly on price or plastic quality.
4. Most racks seem to use lidless designs. Any arguments for or against this approach as it might pertain to air movement or securing the animals.

Thanks,

Eric

I prefer heat tape, it's thinner therefore requiring less of a routed slot to put it in and it's wider giving a wider heated area.

>>2. In using the heat tape, are there recommended methods of ensuring it won't be damaged by plastic tubs being pulled in and out over it. route a shallow slot in the shelf

I think more so on availability and modularity. Always better if you can make a rack for multiple size tubs ie Sterilite 1754/1756 are both the same height and one is double the size so one 1756 or two 1754's will fit into almost the exact same size rack. The trick is to make the rack so it will accomodate both.

I have both and lidless is by far the way to go. Nothing better then sliding the tub out part way to find no care is needed and just slide it back in. With lidded, you have to pull the tub all the way out and remove the lid. Lidless does require tighter tollerences so nobody escapes. but the=at is relative to the tub/occupant size. Small hatchling racks need to be the tightest. While growout and small adult racks can be looser fitting.
