burmation end

mack1time Feb 05, 2007 09:32 PM

So I have taken all my corns out after a 60 day burmation. I started adding heat last week and should be at normal temps by next week. I am just curious as I have never cooled my breeders in the past, how long after the first coupl meals can I start to introduce couples?

some people don't wait and introduce them as soon as they are warm. Others wait until the female sheds. In my experience, the females are not very receptive until they shed.

What Misty mentioned usually holds true. Females are usually not responsive just out of brumation. Don't forget, it is still very early in the season, especially depending on where you live in the country. Now is the time you should just concentrate on feeding them well(especially the females). After their "post-brumation shed is when the female will start giving off pheromones that will be irresistable to the males!!. This will be around March......Also, it is a very good idea to make sure the male is not overfed and sluggish, you want him to be "on the prowl", not fat and ready for a nap!!, kinda like your mate asking you to have sex after a "full coarse steak dinner". This will optimize your mating results.....also, many people throw in her freshly shed skin in along with the male, as this has a good amount of "pheromone" smell on it as well!...good luck, Doug

I haven't brumated for a few years now.

I'm located in Southern Ontario and keep my snakes in a room facing North with plenty of natural light coming in.

Through the natural light my Corns can sense the lengthening of the days right now and cycle themselves for breeding.

Watch for signs of ovulation in your females..

ie: swelling not caused by food, and a tendency to lay around lengthwise or in a tight 'U' shape

....and following their next shed place a male in with them and see what happens.

Here in Southern Ontario my Corns typically breed from early March to early April, varying from female to female. Checking my records, most of my females breed in the same timeframe every year; give or take a week.

Hope this helps.
Don't worry too much, since brumation is by no means a necessity for breeding Corns.

after every female's shed......place a male with her ans see what happens....they will start breeding at times in January ,depending on your light cycle and temps........

.......corns usually chase the females fairly fast upon placing them together.......and can chase, breed, and finish copulation within 15 minutes if they know each other and have done this before.....so watch them or you may miss it.....

clean the cage and if using newspaper watch for signs that they bred.......stains ,blood, at times very little and at times alot .......(looks like egg yolk smeared on the paper at times with a little blood in it maybe)........

keep trying .......if the male chases and female runs away......take him out so she and he don't go nuts.....(or let them together if you like....they will make a mess).........keep trying till they copulate...then breed them every 2 days till female cops like 6 times.........

........I have actually had a female breed like 3 males within an hour probably........10 minutes each and I kept switching males out.......she didn't mind at all.she knew it was time....

if they don't copulate try after each female's shed.....

I just brought my breeders out of brumation Wednesday.
I gave them all their first meals Sunday night. They each got a small hopper to get their systems going.
As of a few minutes ago they had all kept their meals down and are doing well.
Next Sunday I will give them each an adult mouse. If they hold those down the following week the females will go from a single adult to an adult and a hopper. The males will continue on an adult mouse per week.
This feeding schedule will continue until they start shedding.
When each male and female (I wish to pair up) has shed I will put them together.
So basically to make a long story short...when they have had their first sheds.
Now I have a couple that went into the blue while brumating and will probably shed in the next couple of days.
In the case of these guys I will probably wait until they shed again.

This is just the way I do it.
There are many many people who I am sure do things differently and probably more efficiently but my way seems to work for me and the snakes...lol
