question about the use of foggers

superdave1781 Feb 06, 2007 01:51 PM

Hello all, I have a question: do any of you use foggers to help maintain humidity? And if so, how long do they last before you have to get the replacement kit? I am currently misting my brbs cage 3 times a day, but it is still hard to keep the humdity up this time of year. Thanks!
P.S. I just wanted to say how helpful everyone on this subforum is! I don't post often, but I do try to read everyone else's posts, and everyone here does a great job of actually answering peoples questions!

Dave I would just like to comment on what kind of cage are you using to be spraying 3 times a day and it evaporating or leaking out. I achieve 85% just by limiting the air flow with no water added and the water bowl is on the cold side and the room is at 47% humidity with a space heater drying the air out. I would stop the water from getting out rather than just trying to get it stay humid. If your snake has to much air hitting him or her then you add the water then that can't be to good. I HEARD that snakes don't like foggers because of the vibrations but this is second hand info not from me firsthand. I only spray my cages about five squirts a month and that is just during their shed cycle. Some how air is swooping in and drying it out, what substrate or moss are you using?

Listen to Bob, I was going to tell you the same thing.

I never mist my cages, ever!

Set up the habitat to control the humidity, not try to force humidity into a system that won't keep it. Primary loss of humidity is ventilation. Snakes (BRB's) do not use much Oxygen so ventilation is not high on the priority list. Each of my cage sections (six cubic feet) has one 3 inch round vent.

David,
...Like everyone is saying: limit the ventilation so that the humidity does not escape from the cage. If you do need to add water to the cage misting or spraying is WAY too time consuming. Just pour a couple ounces of water on the substrate and leave it to evaporate slowly.

Another thing to keep in mind.. Alot of those foggers are built cheaply and will actually cause electrical shock if you come in contact with them.. Not sure if it will kill a snake or not, but certainly not something I want to test..

Thanks everyone! Let me give you all a better description of my setup: he/she is in a 20 gallon glass cage with a screen top (basic cage sold at all the pet shops), the temp. in the room stays about 80 during the day and 75 at night (I live in an apartment and have most of my snakes in the second bedroom, so I close off most of the other vents in the apartment to let most of the heat go into that room)I have gas heat, and during this time of year the air in my apartment gets very very dry. I'm using cypress much for a substrate, with clumps of moss scattered around, water bowl on the cold side, hide box on each side, I have a small florescent light on top plugged into a timer for a day/night cycle, and a heat lamp with a 40 watt bulb on the left side that is on only during the day (also plugged into the timer) the rest of the top I've tried to cover with aluminum foil. I also have several fake plants and vines in the cage. The day time temp in the cage 85 on the hot side and about 80 on the cool, while at night the whole cage stays about 75.
Does anybody see anything that I am doing wrong? With this setup, I still have touble keeping the humidity up; the moss drys out, should I be taking it out and soaking it every few days or so? Just to remind you, the snake seems happy as can be, is eating great (other than the fact it won't touch a mouse and I'm having trouble finding small enough rats for it right now), has not had a problem with shedding in over a year, and is fairly active at night.
P.S. sorry this is so long, but I wanted to spell everything out so it would be clear as to how I have the setup

Dave,
...The fact that your snake is doing well is testament to the fact that what you are doing is okay. It does seem to me that you are wasting electricity and effort heating the cage and also drying it out so that you have to work keeping it moist. The room temperature is plenty warm for the snake. Your two bulbs are driving too much moisture out of the cage. I would get rid of both of them and cover all of the top with the aluminum foil. As long as your room temperature does not drop below 75 for an extended period of time you do not need to heat the cage.
...Are you a fan of Super Dave Osborne?
Jeff

Thank you for the advice! As for your question, I'm not really a fan of Super Dave Osborne, although I do find his stunts interesting. I got the nickname in my childhood because of some crazy stunts I would try playing in the snow! One year we had a huge ice storm and the ground was covered by about 2 inches of ice, and we all had runner sleds (the kind with metal runners; they don't go very good on snow, but were fast and easy to control on ice!) I took some rough tumbles down steep, tree covered hills, but always had a blast playing in the snow...anyways, everyone just started calling me superdave and I've used it ever since for screen names lol
