Pretty gross topic BUT necessary....

AmyG May 21, 2003 07:04 AM

I was wondering, of all the blood owners in here, can you guys help me by telling me about your bloods as babies and how often they pooped? And your experience and knowledge with this...
My Isabelle, whom I received a month and a half ago, still hasn't pooped. I have soaked her and everything. Tried to manipulate it with my hands downwards (very softly). She is at 78% humidity, eaten 7 pre killed rats (grown by me), and is at the right temps.
I know it is common for bloods not to poop too often, but a month and a half? And she has already shed. As much as she eats, she should be crapping every 2 weeks at least. My older blood craps about every 2 weeks, after 1-2 meals... but that's all.
Any ideas or suggestion would be appreciated.

i wouldn't worry about it.
if it hasn't defecated in six months, then id start to worry...
not only do babies defecate less often...newly acquired specimens seem to take a longer time doing there "biz" then the rest of your collection.
eventually, it will get into a schedual.

amy,
My girl is VERY spuratic, she will crap every day if I put her in the tub. Or she has gone 2 months before (when I first got her). I have heard of them going as long as 4-5 months (I belive that I would make a trip to the vet if she didnt go in that long though). I would not worry terribly yet if it were me, they tend to be "poop camels". Hope this helps.

My little black blood took three months to go.

I really have no idea about how often they poop...

My little girl has yet to poop since I got her two months ago, but then again, she's only eaten two meals since then. She's picky -.-

Mine only goes when he/she sheds. I bought mine as a hatchling in summer of 2001.

Ok, first some background on my animals. I got my two Sumatran reds last July and they were 18" and 20". They were both kept in individual, smallish Sterilites with large water bowls and newspaper substrate with proper temps and humidity. They both ate like pigs (and still do!), once a week on mice and/or rats. The problem I encountered was constipation. Big chunks of solid uric acid would block them up and I would have to manually work the chunks out and the poops would follow. I would only do this when I could see they were obviously blocked up (you know it when you see it). In February, I moved both into a custom 4 x 2 x 2 cage with roughly the same temps and humidity and noticed a big difference in their bathroom habits. With more room to stretch out and move around, they have had zero problems in that arena, with both pooping and urinating on a regular basis. They are both currently in the 3.5-4 foot range and healthily plump (1 jumbo rat per week, each) and poop every 2-3 weeks. They also tend to release alot of liquid urine in between major defecations/solid urinations which makes for ALOT of paper changes. I guess my point is that once they had the opportunity to stretch out and exercise more, the problems disappeared. I think this as well as keeping them very well hydrated (I try and soak them for an hour a week) makes for a
a happy blood with healthy bathroom habits. Of course, just my opinion based on my experiences. Good luck!!

You know something.... what you said seems to make sense... but one thing I was concerned about, in your case, by the way you explained their bathroom habits, is maybe yours have internal parasites!I hope I am totally wrong but... the only animal I have ever seen do what you have explained (uric acids coming out in between poops) is with my Dumeril's boa who has been diagnosed with pin worms and coccidia. I think her "habits" of the uric acids coming out between poops has to do with internal parasites. None of my other animals do this, and no other has been diagnosed with parasites.
Here I go... rambling. I know the original topic was about my blood not pooping, and you were trying to help. And I thank you... but have you ever had your bloods checked for internal parasites? It just sounds all too familiar to me.

Thanks for the concern. They are clean. By the way, I have had many snakes with the same pattern, especially once they get bigger and their metabolisms slow down. It's not uncommon at all in my experience (been keeping herps since like, 1977) for boids to only defecate occasionally, but urinate more often.
