Turkey Diet

Anubis Aug 10, 2003 10:28 PM

For the sake of having a third option for diets I wanted to now how to prepare the "turkey diet"..Any ideas I have ground turkey but do I need to cook it first to kill any bacteria?. My Bosc eats Rodents and Crickets 5-6 days a week but when I don't have any on hand occasionally I would like to find out what goes with the turkey if anything

You can mix egg yolk to hold the ground trukey(raw) into nice little balls. Of course add the usual calcium supplements so you monitor get a balanced meal/ snack.
I dont reccomend this being the base of your animals diet. Whole prey is superior by far.
side note: Another thing you can supplement your monitors diet with is beef heart. Ive used both ground turkey and beefheart as a supplement when I couldnt afford all the mice. That was also before I found wholesalers, and when my rescue opperation was in full swing.

Pro Exotics website has the recipe for it to mix it exactly right(under the questions link). If you don't mix enough bone meal in it,it will give them Diarrhea

the recipe the san deigo zoo uses is:
2.5 pounds of lean ground turkey
2 tablespoons bone meal
1/2 a ground up centrum tablet
Mix the three together well and freeze. I like to shape mine into little meatballs so that i can microwave them to defrost them when im ready to feed my savanna's. There is no need to cook the turkey. I have never had a problem feeding my guys defrosted food from the freezer. The bigger guy i have loves it. I even rubed some on a a gerbal inorder to entice him into eating it. It worked well since i got a great deal on gerblals from the reptile expo.
(use 1% fat because some of the other ground turkey can contain as much fat at ground beef!)
