I tried feeding my turtles in a separate tank when I first got them - they flatly refused. When I'm staying at my mom's for an extended period of time and put them in the slightly smaller aquarium I keep there, I have one who refuses to eat, even if I'm there for two weeks. They're highly sensitive to their environment. They absolutely get homesick, and they like to eat at home.

One tip, though - if you feed them live feeder fish, the tank doesn't get dirty so quickly. There is also one brand of turtle food that doesn't make the water murky - Nutrafin Max. Another tip - when feeding them turtle food, be sure to turn the filter off. Remove any food they leave uneaten, and then turn the filter back on - otherwise, the food will get into the filter and make the water gross.
