Since my tank is to small for my monitor im going to build it a cage. Does anyone have any suggestions on how big the cage should be if its for my 30 inch mangrove monitor.

Look at the care sheets (water monitor care sheet is a good place to start) on proexotics site they have some good info. It sounds like you are going to need to adjust some of your conditions in addition to building a bigger cage. I think at this point you would be better off trying to build a cage that is big enough to house an adult. I would say the minimum is a 4'x8' footprint. Mangroves can get pretty big and that is barely going to suffice for one that is on the smaller end of the adult size range.

you should not have purchased this monitor, sorry.

you are asking the most basic questions, these are all things that should be done BEFORE you acquire the animal. keep it in mind for the next monitor, and make the best choice.

i can't tell you how to build a cage, that is so much monumental detail. i would use the metal troughs as a base though, and build from there.

use our Water monitor caresheet as a basis for your husbandry. temps, diet, it all applies. get the Sav book by Bennett, and the Nile book by Faust, those are also at our site. and a temp gun.

when you ignore that advice, then reconsider and REALLY, get those books and a temp gun, they will help your progress immensely, it is not a sales ploy : )

if you can return the Mangrove for credit, do it. it is a wild caught monitor that has no interest in you, captivity, or any kind of handling. look into the Ackies, they are a terrific monitor experience.

best of luck.

Still I agree and wish every keeper would get one for there monitors, in fact I often advise them to mail order from you.
Invaluable tool.

I'd say 8' long x 6' wide x 6' long at the least. It may be 30 inches now, but it will get very big very fast.
