importance of deworming in Babies

jonthefb Feb 07, 2007 11:34 AM

Hello, my name is jon, and although i have been keeping herps for awhile now, i recently aquired my first captive bred baby ambilobe panther chameleon. I am unassure of the sex of my little guy, but am hoping that it is a male.

My question is this: How concerned should i be about potential worms internally in my baby panther? The individual who i purchased the baby from has been breeding panthers for some time now, and has a large assortment of broodstock. I reviewed the chameleon necropsy site that someone here had linked to and noticed the presence of nema/trematodes in the individuals that were being necropsied. Is there any concern to have my little guy dewormed? and if so, at what age would this be appropriate? Or am i just being paranoid? Any help is appreciated!

Cheers~!
jon

Some people let the parasites go untreated unless its showing an obvious affect on the chameleon's health. Others treat them every time.

If/since you are concerned, get a vet to do a fecal to see if there are any parasites. Sometimes even one fecal is not enough to determine if there are parasites...the parasites have to be shedding eggs generally. The odd time I have had a parasite come out with the poop.

I almost never worry about parasites unless there is are signs of trouble. Perhaps I've just been lucky.
