Micro chipping ball pythons

dougle Feb 07, 2007 12:07 PM

Does anyone microchip their balls ,knows of anyone else who does , and how the procedure is done. With this huge wave of gentic morph explosion we have espically in the het I think it would be a great idea to do this to keep track of the genetic make up of the balls that are kept in collections , any response or advice is welcome on this matter.

i have a few snake's that where micro chiped when i bought them from Pro Exotic's.. i'd say it's something that should be done more offten and a program started to track a snakes history it's whole life. i think it's a much better idea than paper's...

Micro chipping has been done for a few years now with success. A PIT tag is injected sub-q and away you go. However their are two downfalls that I've seen. One, the scanner has to be inches away from the transponder to read ( you'd have to know where the chip was implanted to make sure you not missing it ) and two, the bodies defense system might recognize it as a foreign invader and eventually push it out; Similair to a sub-q parasite. It may take some time to do, but it has happened

it is a big thick needle and syringe, and the chip is like a grain of long rice.

i don't like to chip babies, as they are so small, but juvies and adult balls, no sweat.

We chip all of our animals. Not only is it good for the high-end ones and hets, but it is also handy when breeding a group of normal females - just scan the snake, instead of trying to memember which one is which. See link below for our online article (sorry for the margin spill-over .. I just noticed it)
