Who do I report abused chams to ?

mountainlion Feb 07, 2007 12:33 PM

I was getting feeders in a pet store I normally do not go to and will not go to again. They had 4 veiled chams, probably all about 6-7 months old that were in the same glass cage. They weren't looking good, very thin, dehydrated, no proper lighting. It was depressing.

Who should I call to report these people? I imagine if animal control or something like that gets involved there still will be no hope for these little guys, but it's better than the hell they're in now.

Any advice is appreciated.

You will need to check with your city to see who does pet shop inspections. Depending on where you live it could be your local animal control. It might be a county level agency. Usually animal control investigates animal cruelty, abuse and neglect charges too. Once you find out which agency would investigate animal conditions, contact them and report the shop. Provide them with accurate care information from another source other than yourself (supposedly unbiased), a book, etc. Also send a letter to the pet shop telling them you will report their poor care and include a copy of the report.

Also check with local herp societies. Where do you live? Here is a link to herp soc. by state, same site has state vet listings which may be able to direct you in addition to Carlton's suggestions. It really sucks.

unfortunately, depending on what state you live animal cruelty laws do not apply to reptiles. I live in madison wisconsin. many years ago we had a pet store called aquarius pets. They closed down. A few weeks later the land lord went in and was disgusted to find that many of the stores reptiules were left to starve to death. Their was some turtles, lizards and tortoises. Well, it hit the paper and everyone had a fit but Wisconsin laws are that animal crulety doesn't apply to reps and amphibs.
