Latest poll, in 3 part harmony

duffy Feb 07, 2007 01:34 PM

Here's this month's poll:

How often do you get around to handling EACH of your snakes?

How many snakes do you have right now?

Which one(s) are you most & least likely to handle often?

I try to handle each of my 15 snakes at least once a week. I think that 15 is near MY personal limit in terms of being able to handle them all regularly, so I plan to keep my collection at least under 20 for now. All but one (an albino florida king) are North American Ratsnakes (that includes the corns). I try to handle the young ones as often as I can, to get them as calm and tame as possible. My goal this year is to handle each and every one of them FAR more often (at least 2-3 times weekly), so the bigger ones don't get neglected. I sat typing earlier with my bugeye leucistic texas rat draped over my shoulders, and he was amazingly docile for what MOST folks think a texas ratsnake is like. All 15 of my snakes are very easily handled at this time. A couple of my big corns have such a powerful feeding response that I really need for them to get BACK in the habit of knowing that opening their cages does NOT always mean dinner time! Duffy

I feed in separate containers, so by default all snakes get handled at least once a week. Cleaning and spot cleaning usually involves pulling a few snakes out as well.

How many snakes do you have right now?

57 as of now.

Which one(s) are you most & least likely to handle often?

I try to handle my baby and juvie snakes daily. Especially the young Rat Snakes. I don't handle the Cribo any more than I have to.

Probably good (although time consuming, to say the least) that you feed that way. Otherwise, with those numbers, I would think that at least a few would become strangers. I guess it really depends on your other time constraints. :D

Yeah. Working really gets in the way of snake rearing!

Which one(s) are you most & least likely to handle often?
with only one lol well I'm thinking he's the most likely and well he's also the least likely

...That's one of the advantages of having only a few (or just one)...More individual attention & enjoyment of the one(s) you have. :D

Hi there, you have a beautiful snake! I recently was given a snake by a friend of a friend of a...anyways, they said it was an albino rat snake, but that is all they knew about it. Not that it really matters, but at the same time, I like to know exactly what I have! From what I can tell from the pic, they look almost identical! Does your snake have alot of yellow on the underside at the head and "neck" area? If it does, they have to be the same kind! So can you tell me what you know about yours??

I have eight snakes. I try to give each of them 2-3 handling days/excercise times a week. 20 to 30 min each.
The snakes that are usually first to be handled are my '05 Speckled and my '06 WC Great Basin Gopher just because they're small and in small, easy to get to enclosures. Until recently least likely handled snakes were the nocturnals (my Childrens Python and my Glossy snake) cuz they were active @ night. Duffy, good post btw.

I think about the "balance" between wanting to have more snakes and wanting to be able to have the time to interact with my entire collection. I go to the Ohio reptile show several times a year (going later this morning, as a matter of fact). I get my frozen rodents there, enjoy checking out all the herps, and am often tempted to bring home a new snake. But 15 snakes is just about my magic number. I know I will wind up keeping a few more as I continue to breed them. It's pretty cool having snakes thay hatched out in MY snake room! That's one of the reasons I will probably limit myself to one or two clutches a year. Duffy

How often do you get around to handling EACH of your snakes?
Some get handled more than others...I try to feed them all out of their cages, but when I'm having a busy week, I don't always get them out. I try to get each one out once or twice a week, especially the babies.

How many snakes do you have right now?
10 (see my signature for list)

Which one(s) are you most & least likely to handle often?
My adult snakes are really mostly calm, so I spend most of my attention to handling the young ones. I love them all, but I really enjoy handling my hogg island boa (about 2' long) and my amel. corn snake (about 4' long) the most. I handle my banded California Kingsnake the least because he does not seem to like to be messed with, so I just leave him alone most of the time.
