Hey I was wondering if any one could tell me how to pick a Savannah monitor which will be easiest to tame.
first get a copy of the Sav book by Ravi and Bennett, available at our site, or here on the classifieds. read up about Savs, husbandry, etc, and you will learn what "makes" for a good animal, and have a better chance selecting one.
before purchase, also look very hard at the Ackies. they are captive bred (your Sav won't be), have lots of personality, are rewarding captives, and their smaller size makes them much easier to house.

If your looking for a monitor that is tame meaning not agressive towards you then just grab the one that looks healthiest. If your looking for a monitor that sits on your lap and enjoys a nice ear rub your probobly looking into the wrong family of lizards.
But its basically pretty simple as far as which one is most tolerant. Basically handle a few of them and which ever one is the calmest is the most tame, however you have to be able to tell whether it is healthy or not.
Savs are imported from the wild constantly and in most cases are in pretty poor condition. I thought my water monitor was extremely calm when i first got her, and then after being bitten and snapped at while removing her form her cage for cleaning realized that when i thought she was tame she was infact unhealthy. And let me tell you its quite suprising at how much blood a realtivly small monitor can draw.
If i were you i'd start with a pair or even a trio of yellow ackies they're great. Very high strung type of monitors, my one has a habit of climbing things that are un-climb-able. It tries to climb the wooden frame and after shimmying up about 8 inches starts slipping and sliding down while its legs are going crazy in attempts to get higher. These guys are capable of displaying amusing and sometimes halarious types of behavior.
