I finally tracked down what kind of ribbon snake I have. He has a large dot on his head (or two that are fused), 8 supralabial scales (instead of 7 like the Eastern Ribbon Snake), an orange stripe down the middle, two off-white stripes that run along the 3rd and 4 scales on either side, no dark stripes bordering the belly, only one plate for the anal scale (not divided into two), the scales are keeled, and the tail takes up a little over 25% (but not 1/3) of the overall length. This allowed me to narrow him down to Thamnophis proximus or the Western Ribbon Snake. However, the background was olive green, not brown or black. So I looked up some subspecies and came across the Gulf Coast Ribbon Snake (Thamnophis proximus orarius). I also had him probed and it's a boy.
Does anyone else have this species? If so, has anyone had any success with breeding them in captivity? Most of the ribbon snakes in pet stores are wild caught.
