Legislation Warning from around theU.S.A

ldblawson Feb 08, 2007 07:21 AM

I have noticed that more ans more I been seeing paople from different states posting these kind of post. Well it is no different in Florida. It is no joke our industry/hobby is coming to a painful end, each state is slowly chocking the life out of it. In Florida they have been have meeting about all the new law that will more then likely be passes and will all but stop people from having all giant snakes and monitors and pet tagging most others. These are some of the reason they gave for the new laws.

Animals set free in to the wild.
Venomous bite
People having venomous snakes with no permit
bad husbandry
Danger to people.

After the last meeting I had the chance to speak with on of the wildlife Officers, this is what he had to say.

That in the past the animal industry has alway policed its own, but dut to the rising civil cases in the nation and the state of Florida and with people being able to by venomous on the internet the animals violation has doubled.

I was told that a young man was bitten by a Black mamba that he was given free only paid shipping) by a dealer out of state (I was not given a name) once they searched his home they found many other snake like cobra, puffs, rhino and others, all these snake he got from the internet.

These are the reasons that the laws are going to get alot worse.

We need to police our own and then maybe the won't do it for us.

The reasons behind bans are not unknown. However, good luck getting the hobby to police itself. There are far too many money driven breeders out there either looking to make a quick buck, or other breeders in which have bred their animals because it would be cool to do so without any plans for the offspring. Now, they have these babies that they dont know what to do with and so they have to sell them to just about anyone who wants one to get down on their stock. Does this stop them from breeding next season? I think not. Unfortunately, we can't get the breeders to start cleaning up their act and in addition, we can't get the people buying them to be smarter and stop purchasing out of impulse. In the end, it will come to government control. However, if you are lucky, then you can possibly work with your government to make things FAIR when passing legislation. Get some hoops to jump through without making it too strict that people can't possibly make them.
