Need Tortoise Overview

KBinTX Feb 08, 2007 08:50 AM

I was wondering if anybody had seen a tortoise overview type document on somebody's website - like a spreadsheet of size, humidity requirements, feeding habits, etc. of all the different tortoises.
I am interested in getting a tortoise but they all differ so much! Initially I was offered a free, large Sulcata and thought that was a good idea. We live in South Central Texas on several acres - all fenced in with small mesh fence, sandy soil, etc. I figured a tortoise like that would like that but then I learned online how destructive Sulcatas get and that they become more aggressive as they age, etc. so now I think a different tortoise might be better.
Not too small, not too big, not aggressive, can live outside (with access to shelter, heated if necessary), can tolerate heat and humidity, etc.
I've looked at the different care sheets but looking at some type of comparison chart would be even better.

After some research I think I would like a Marginated Tortoise best. What do you think about them? Do you think they would be comfortable in our climate/set-up?

I live in Arizona, and have successfully raised two Marginated Tortoise outside. They are almost 6 years old. They have a fenced in pen with a cave/hide built of brick and plywood, with sod over the top. Also Pampas grass which they love to sleep under. They have done very well! Just make sure they have shade whenever they want it, and I hose them down at least twice a week when it's warm.

Beth,

thanks so much! I will keep your suggestions in mind when planning the enclosure!
