Where should I get my snake?

terrible_one Feb 08, 2007 12:30 PM

I am probably going to order one online becuase they are most healthy and better selection then my local petco. Anyway what are some good corn snake breeders to get my snake from. I need to start making phone calls/sending emails. Im looking for a baby. I still dont know if I want a milk or a corn but first I need to check out breeders. Are the people on the classifieds section of this site good?

Also how does the snake come? In a box? Wont it be mad when I open it up after being shipped probably turned upside down and such. Youd think he bite me right out of the box. Should I just put him right in his cage and let him relax a little. I guess these are questions I could ask breders..any suggestions? Thanks

I always suggest that IF any herp shows come to your area...THAT is your #1 best bet. You can click on EVENTS to see what's up, and/or post a question like..."Any herp shows in the (name your location) area?"

I am spoiled in that I live just north of a city that has a good show every month. The combination of selection, quality and value just can't be beat. Plus, you can spend ALL your money on the snake instead of half on the snake and half on shipping. Well, it does cost 4 bucks to get in the Ohio show, but I make that up in just the money I save on frozen rodents that I buy there. Good luck finding a show or a good breeder. Duffy

As the previous poster said reptile shows are good when available. I don't say this really for the price although on cheeper snakes the cost of shipping is unfortunately often a large portion of the cost if not even being more then the snakes price. Not to mention that it's been my experience that I get much prices from breeders when not at shows since I'm not paying show markup.

The main reasons I say shows are one of your best options is that you can observe/handle the animals before purchasing and you can directly talk to and question the breeder about the best way to care for the animals they produce. Especially if you are buying the setup at the same time you can find out what they think would work best for the specific animal.

That being said it is relatively easy to find a good reputable quality breeder to order from if you aren't in a rush.

First and best is to talk to a breeder you know and trust. They will often know a breeder that they have dealt with and trust that produces what you are looking for.

Second, spend some time browsing the forums of the snakes you are interested in. It will become quickly apparent from the posts people make which breeders they have had positive experiences with. Also you will see in most forums at least a few breeders who are exceptionally helpfull and informative in their posts. Being helpful is not a sure thing as far as a breeder but it is normally a really good sign because people selling questionable animals don't generally want the exposure(and normally aren't disposed to help for free lol)

What general area/region do you live in? I only ask because people could prolly tell you if there is a nearby show. I know of a couple regular ones in northern California but don't have info on many others.

Hope this helps

Hey Duffy which Ohio show do you go to? Cleveland or Columbus? You might have gotten a snake from my boss's place as she goes to both shows.

Check out Kathy Love's website. She has quality animals and good info on how to take care of your new arrival.
