Best Substrate for small Ackies?

caseyhawk55 Feb 08, 2007 12:45 PM

I have a trio of 1 month old yellow Ackies in rout. I am using a 20 gallon starter tank. What should I use for substrate? I have been told to use everything from Sani chips (LLL Reptile), Decomposed Granite/soil/play sand mix (Pro Exotics)to plain old dirt from a dry river bed.(Breeder) That's great but most of the picks I have seen have hatchling/juvies on papertowls or nothing at all. Somebody help the kid out.....Thanks

we used to do hatchlings on paper towels for two weeks. why? old antiquated habits i suppose : )

a good soil will work from the egg to the grave : )

Some type of dirt that holds burrows and lots of objects for them to hide under. I don't think bark or sani chips are the way to go. I mixed the red desert sand they sell at petsmart with some regular sand/soil dirt and got a good burrowing substrate.

Problem is where do you find a good soil?

some folks buy it, some folks are fortunate enough to dig it up locally. the key with soil is to be creative, and realize your options. the Home Depot mix makes for a good start to work from, once you become familiar, you understand more what to look for, broadening your choices even more : )
