Recomendations while waiting for the vet

JasonW Feb 08, 2007 01:03 PM

Hi everyone. This week while feeding my snakes I was feeding one of my 06 hatchlings and he deficated in the bucket before eating. Up untill now everythign with the remaning 3 hatchlings has been a ok other than the regurge or 2. Below is a picture of what he left behind for me. We are curently awaiting a vet visit but unfortunatly I cleaned it up befor hiting myself in the head and thinking I should have collected it for the vet. HAve you ever seen anything like this before? All other wast has looked normal thus far. Sorry but the photo is rather large.

Well, first off,...A "regurge or two" is not a good sign at all!!.....the stool does look rather loose with mucus, I don't know what temps you have been keeping it at,..but it should ideally be kept(unless brumating) at about 79 - 84 degrees. you definitely need to get a "fecal floatation" done by a vet as soon as possible....You can help the snake out by keeping it at a slightly higher temp of about 85 - 89 degrees at this time until you see the vet. This could be any number of things, but could very possibly be caused by an amoeba(Entamoeba invadens) if this was the case, it can be treated with doses of Metronidazole(Flagyl)with successful results, remember,....early diagnosis is your best weapon, as many people try "hit-or-miss" remedies, wasting valuable time for the snake....hope this helps,....................................................Doug
