Substrate questions

Okay, here is a quick question. I have black aquarium gravel. I was thinking it would look great for my Leos. But then I thought about something.

The heat from the undertank heating pad and lights would really heat all those rocks up maybe making the tank to hot.

Just wanted to see if anyone thought of this or maybe tried it? Or just what do you think of it?

I would not use it, can you imagine what it would be like to swallow a large rock yourself and then try to pass it? Well imagine that for a little leo's belly.

If you want something cool and natural looking I would say go with slate or ceramic tiles, they hold heat really well with under tank heaters.

Typically, it is not recommended for two reasons: the first is possibility of ingestion as already mentioned, the second is that sometimes the gravel can be sharp and these little leos are made for walking on sand not little rocks and it can be hard on their feet and may interfere with shedding.

I'm a big fan of papertowels, but tiles can be used if you are looking for a change or a different look.

Maybe it is just an excuse to get some (more) fish?
