Meet Ankh...

seductivereptile Feb 08, 2007 07:13 PM

I finally got over to the shop today. Meet Ankh (sex unknown)... my new Egyptian Uromastyx. I put it in the enclosure and added some turnip greens and a few dandelion flowers, with a temp of 120, this lil one ate all the flowers and most of the turnip greens. I did my usual measurements and weigh-in and they were 6 inches and 30 grams. The weight might not be accurate, since the body was sorta arched, but I'm sure its fairly close.
Well pros tell me what you think, does it look hydrated enough, etc. I really appreciate all of your help in the last week or so, and your patience in answering all my many questions.

Note: If it looks a bit red to you, its because they had it in reddish colored sand. Sorry the pics are at that strange angle, I didn't want to stress it on its first day in its new home.

So, SOOOo cute!

IMO, he is a little on the skinnier side, but with what you are feeding him I bet he bulks up quickly! I have noticed I tend to have pretty fat Uros too so my opinion might be skewed a little.

My inclination would be to give him a bath after he has had a chance to calm down a bit to get the sand off of him, but that is probably not really necessary.

Congratulations on your new baby!!! Take lots of pics so you can look back and me astonished at how big he/she has gotten!

Congrats again!

Whoa, I missed the second pict! Looks very skinny, to say the least. Nothing irreversible at this point, I'm sure, but you're approaching borderline.

Thank you! I named it Ankh because I have no idea how to sex them. LOL I keep referring to it as a he.. who knows??
As far as eating, seems this one likes its food.. a lot. Maybe its a bit thin due to the larger/skittish one that was in with it. I am making sure the veggies are always available and hope that it keeps this appetite so it can pick up some weight. I bought everything that was suggested to me, just to be on the safe side. When can I start beans, seeds.. etc.??

This angle he looks a bit on the slim side , I agree.

Keep an eye on him, offer lots of good foods, I'm sure within a short time he will fill out nicely!

Here is what I have done so far..
When I got it home, I put greens in the enclosure and then added a few dandelion flowers. The flowers lasted all of a few minutes, it gobbled those right up and downed most of the greens later. I didn't want to make a huge fuss over it yesterday. Today, I soaked it for a few mins (I know, mixed reviews on that issue) then dried well and put it back into the enclosure on the heated (120-125) basking area, added some chopped spring mix with carrots on top (calcium powder) and after it warmed up nicely, it ate again. Looks like this one is going to love to eat, which is great! I didn't add the bean/seed mixture, I wasn't sure if I should until its older. When can I add the bean/seed mixture?? Does this all sound acceptable? I don't want to miss anything. As for his weight, what should that be for his length? Super sweet personality and he seems to be adjusting nicely, any suggestions??
Thanks so much!!
Pic is from earlier today, after a soak.

You are, for sure, a fine Uro parent. All sounds good!

If he's hydrated he's ready for hard foods.
