Sick Gecko?

zeweaver Feb 08, 2007 08:27 PM

So since its been really cold out side my house hasn't been as warm as normal. Not much i can do past turning the heat up to 80 so i went out and got another tank heater for my gecko. Recently my gecko has stopped eating or not eating as much as normal. Because of this it has stopped going to the bathroom or the size of its movements have been a lot smaller than normal. The heat in the tank is around 65-70 at night and during the day its 75-80 i'm not home much during the day so i have to look at it before i leave and when i get back. He is still moving around the tank but most of the time he is either beside the heater on the side of the tank or over the heater that is under the tank. Should i take him to the vet or am i just over reacting?

what are you checking temps with? Thats kinda cool for a leo, but still sounds like a parasite problem to me. i would get temps up and make a vet visit.

What are you using to heat the tank? During the day at my house we keep the thermostat at 65 and my leos hide still hits about 90F with the cheep UTH I got for them, Also keep in mind they may be going into there winter cycle. My female dose this every year. When the weather outside cools down so dose she and she also stops eating. She went nearly 2 months "60 days" without eating a bite last year. and emerged bigger, stronger and healthyer than ever. Keep an eye on there weight to. Durring my females fasting she lost nearly no weight at all. Bottom line though its only maybe $15-$30 for an ofice visit to the vet so its better to be safe than sorry

Good news. My gecko just ate for the first time Monday night he ate about 8 large crickets and passed them this morning. I'm thinking it was just to cold for him to move around I went out and bought another lamp and got a ceramic heater. Its about 90 Degrees in the basking area of the tank and 80 at the cool end. At night it gets down to low 70's high 60's so i am happy.
