Is anyone working with Maricopa county, AZ gophers?

gila7150 Aug 11, 2003 12:06 AM

I would really like to see some pics of gophers from Maricopa County ...especially ones from around Phoenix.
Are any of you breeding gophers from this locale?
Thanks,
Chris

I have an '02 pair that I purchased from John Meltzer. They are very nice looking with tons of attitude. Mine are Maricopa City locale. The original pair was found breeding in a gentlemans back yard. John told me when I purchased this pair that he didn't own the adults anymore. I'm not sure who has them now. Lots of maroonish red in these. Very nice! Pic is of the female @ 8 months ago

That should read Sun City in Maricopa county, not Maricopa City! I need coffee!

I just talked with John Meltzer and he told me that the parents of these were in fact caught in someones back yard in Phoenix, not Sun City. I don't know where I got Sun City from but anyway. Have a great week and take care!

A friend of mine found a little hatchling on the road while she was out there a couple years ago. She gave him to me when she got back. I really like this snake a lot and would like to eventually find a female from the same locale.
Maybe I'll get lucky in Daytona this weekend.

My Maricopa county gopher looks pretty different from yours. Mine is much less red and more of a yellowish / gold color. He has a great disposition. I've never heard so much as a hiss out of him...he thinks he's a cornsnake.
Thanks for sharing the pic of your awesome snake.
