Diet: Boxies Vs. RES

lilypad42 Feb 09, 2007 08:34 AM

I considered posting this question on the RES forum, but I don't usually post there and I respect and trust the opinions and experience of the posters on this forum. So I hope you dont mind if I ask this question... Does anyone else who has RES feed them the same diet as their boxies? When I make up my box turtle cuisine (usually a mixture of fruits and veggies) I always end up giving some to my RES, Rosie, and she DEVOURS every little morsel. She will eat whole grapes and absolutely adores banana, berries, apple, carrots, and all kinds of melon (To be fair, she will eat ANYTHING!) I was wondering if this is a common practice with other slider keepers. I usually read about them being read floating sticks and fish, but are her dietary needs being met with a diet consisting of mostly fruits and veggies (and the ocassional crickets)? Just curious, thanks for any replies!

Wild adult red-eared sliders feed mostly on plant material. They probably have a higher percentage of plant material in their diet in the wild than adult box turtles.

In addition to what you are feeding your turtle, sliders will consume mustard greens, turnip greens, dandelion, spinach, zucchini and aquatic vegetation (i.e. duckweed, water lettuce, water hyacinth, etc.).

They will also consume insects, worms and fish. Many of the commercially prepared turtle diets that exist on the market are excellent slider food.

I'll try some of the items that you suggested. I'm sure Rosie would love them because she is in no way a finicky eater She has eaten fish, crickets, and she destroys whole night crawlers! She's just a garbage disposal. I just wanted to make sure that a diet high in fruit and veggies was ok for her. I wasn't sure if she should be eating primarily protein (fish) or not. Thanks for the reply!
