Just picked up 2 Pixies, some questions

eelnoob Feb 09, 2007 08:58 AM

Just a few question for the experience frog owners.

What type of substrates do you use? I'm currently using the eco earth coconut fiber stuff.

What size enclosures do you have yours in? Mines are in their own 2 1/5g clear plastic storage containers you get from Walmart, Targest.

Do you have waterdish inside the enclosure? I have a 6" saucer halfway filled in each.

What do you feed yours? So far I only have chance to feed crickets and Lobster roaches. Will eventually add, nightcrawlers and thawed out food such as fishes, and shrimps(I love the precook shrimps from Cubfood here, specials for $4 for 50 count).

Any infos you have, you're welcome to post here, would love to hear them.

BTW I have decided to name them: Tiny and Skinny

They wont be tiny and skinny for long! i have two pyxie frogs one that i have had for 4 years and one that i have had for about six months, the one that is 4 years old favors a water enclosure, so that is what she gets, i have tried everything else with her but she loves water. so i keep her in a sterilite container with water up to her elbows, the other frog i have hates water, so i use the same kind of material that you use, as for a water dish i dont offer one simply because i have never seen one use one as long as you keep the bedding moist. as for food get them eating as many different things as you can when they are younger, the 4 year old eats anything and everything, although i tend to stay more on the side of bug protiens, crickets roaches, earthworms super worms, silkies hornworms, and live bearer fish protien such as mollies platties and sword tails, versus goldfish feeders or rosyreds/tuffies. i also feed f/t quail on occasion and very rarely a juvie mouse. i hope some of this helped if you have any other questions feel free to ask

can you help me decide if this is male or female and an apprx age?

APLAXAR Feb 11, 2007 11:54 AM

it would be easier to answer that question if you could snap a few photos of the frog next to something like a quarter, a can of soda, or a birds eye shot of the frog next to a ruler, i would have to know his size do give you a good answer,
thanks

The frog is about 4-5" snout to vent. Sorry i forgot to include a size reference in the photos. I can take more photos at the frogs next feeding. 3 days or so. But first guess what would you say?

APLAXAR Feb 12, 2007 12:56 PM

i would say a male simply for the dark spots on the throat, generally females will have a rather white through with some light grey markings but nothing that dark, and his head looks of short and boxy, than longer. if it is a male and 4 1/2 inches i would say its mabey three years old? but that is also dependent on the feeding scheduals and such so it is just a guess, hope it helped

Note the coloration of this females throat

wow great looking specimen

I have more pics but dont' know how to post multiple pics on here as for videos you can copy and paste. The clear saucer thing frog is in is about 6" across to give you idea how big it is. Was wondering how often do I have to dust their foods with calcium and vitamins, don't really want to over do it.

i dust things every two feedings, my frog tends to get large meals once a week or every two weeks depending on what she was fed, i usually dust fuzzies or quail and sometimes worms, but i make sure that the crickets that i feed are well gut loaded on vitamins(Vit-All) and mixed in is the calcium (Miner-All), but if you dont want to over do it then you probobly arent. i think a vaired diet is very important.
