What am I?

Shaky Feb 09, 2007 08:44 PM

Back in 2003, a relative of mine took this picture just a few hours before I showed up at the campsite. He had been hiking up a hill and saw this big bruiser.
His friend called it a 'red racer'. Well, its not.
Most of you will guess right away, but I scoured that hillside for hours after that, lemme tell ya.

Might help to narrow it down a bit, if you can give us a state.

Well, the State is a dead giveaway - kind of...
I'll give a clue, though...
Limestone hills, ashe juniper, and a canyon setting.

The snake was found in Garner State Park in TX hill country. There the ranges of the TX ratsnake and the Baird's rat overlap.
My first thoughts were perhaps an intergrade, but the longer I looked at it, the more I am convinced its a bairdi.
Anyway, that's my guess, too.
