Becoming a Vet

squidbelly Feb 09, 2007 10:30 PM

I'm looking at what the heck I want to do for the rest of my life right now, and reptile veterinary care seems to be right down my alley. I'm really into math, biology and chemistry (and herps, of course), which I understand are key to any health related field. Good for me. The problem being that I have no idea how one would become a vet specializing with reptiles. This is kind of a new idea for me, although I've always wanted to work with animals.
Any info from somebody who can point me in the right direction would be awesome. Thanks.

There are basically two avenues for vets. Most either work with pets or else they work in agriculture with livestock etc. You are probably not going to make a living working with reptiles alone or even to a significant degree. You can certainly be a pet vet who also works with reptiles but the bulk of your patients will most probably be dogs, cats and the like. There seems to be a shortage of vets willing to work with reptiles so people will seek you out. Your best bet is to work with pets in a larger urban area. If you are good at it you may also become associated with a zoo or similar institution.
