Dazed and Confused!

tailswithscales Feb 09, 2007 11:32 PM

A bit of my background before we get to my confusion. I have been involved with reptiles for 15 plus years and have been breeding snakes for 10 of those years. The last five years was strictly python breedings.

So here is my dazing and confusing.
I have a female Jampea that is now six years old. She has normal Jamp coloring. Last year I want to say in August 06 she had "the glow" and stopped eating. I wasn't figuring she would be gravid as she had not been cycled or had not been with a male since early may. She's shed three times since Oct and had gone back to her normal coloring. The male was put in with her for a few months kicking him out in late Dec, early Jan.
Well now she has "the glow" again and is still just as thick. She has also not moved off the hot side of her enclosure for almost two weeks. I've only seen her off the hot side to stretch across her cage get a drink then right back to the heat.

My question is (I know. About time. lol) she gravid, ovulating, just looking pretty or what? This is my first confusion on if a snake was gravid or what. I also cannot palpate her. She is a flighty little lady.

Here are the pictures taken of her "glow" back in August.
For about the last week or two she has looked EXACTLY like this.

Sorry for no current pictures. I have no camera.
Anyway ............ Thank you for looking and any advice or opinions.

I am confused too. Are you thinking that coloration has something to do with being gravid? This is hardly the case my dear. One of my female jamps laid 64 eggs two weeks ago and she was like any other Jampea. Meaning she changed colors as they all do...gravid or not. All of mine go from crappy brown to an olive green and to a silvery gray all within hours of each change. Sometimes they will stay like the picture you posted for days and then other times they are brown or the silvery gray for a span.

I guess I was thinking her coloration may have something to do with ovulation and such as my Ball pythons, Burmese, and other Retics had seemingly become lighter when they ovulated and were going to lay eggs. She is the only Retic that seems to be a chameleon of sorts with the ever changing colors. How very interesting.

As of last night she was back to being dark, drab, and ugly again. Go figure.
