Identification of ratsnake

Jan Grathwohl Feb 10, 2007 10:42 AM

Hi

I have aquired two males of these nice snakes, but i'm quite a puzzles as to what they are?

Any body have any ideas?

The seller had bought them on a expo in Denmark, and remember something about hypo ratsnakes as a label on the boxes, but i can't get them to fit into anything. My guess would be some kind of morph of obsoletus though.

Any help would be appreciated

Now that's something you don't see everyday. It's a hypomelanistic Black Ratsnake, a.k.a. 'lavender' Black Ratsnake. Nice find!

Thanx you guys

I take it that these are rare?

I have never seen any of these before, untill these came into my possesion.

Both males look the same - quite a shame i don't have any females though

I wouldn't say 'rare', I'd say 'uncommon'. You always seem to find them when you're not specifically looking for them, LOL.

Anyway, here's an idea. If you can't find a lavender female, then why don't you breed them to a whitesided Black Ratsnake instead? It would be cool to see a lavender whitesided Black Rat, and outbreeding never is a bad thing.

I totally agree,..............Hypomelanistic "Black Rat", not only is it "hypo",.......it is VERY hypo!!!, the only thing I can see that has any melanin, is it's eyes!!!If it where any more hypo, it would be a "tyrosinase " albino!!LOL....wow that's a beauty !!.........................................Doug

I agree. If that thing didn't have black eyes, I'd be calling it an albino black rat. Here's a crazy looking albino I hatched out several years ago.
