Anyone have a Uro Garden?

in2deep Feb 11, 2007 09:49 AM

I'm thinking of starting a small-scale garden for my uro. I live in an apartment, so it'll probably be mostly indoors with grow lights except for a few months in the summer.
Anyway, I was thinking of getting some dandelion seeds and a hibiscus (which I've heard do okay indoors).
Any other good suggestions for edible flowers or uro treats?
Thanks.

It sounds like a wonderful idea.. I would love to see pics if you do that. Sorry, I can't be of any help, I am so new to Uros. But I can't wait to read the others ideas and see what you come up with.

I don't know about indoors, but I have some planters outside with pansies, Johnny jump-ups, and nasturtiums. The dandelions just grow on their own.

I don't have uros, but I do have a garden for my chuckwallas. I grow most of their plants outside in those half wine barrels.

I have:

dandelions
mint
cat nip
english plantain
nasturtiums
alfalfa
pansies (mine like the pastels)
cosmos
sweet allysum
perenial merigolds
rough cat's ear (Hypochaeris sp)
lupines
roses

I'm planning to get an assortment of greens in the ground this year too. Searching on-line for edible flowers usually turns up lots of good ideas. I bring different things home to experiment with and the winners get to stay and I pawn off those that they're not into (gazanias, chrysanthemums, calendulas etc).

Thanks to everyone for the ideas.
Alice, on the catnip, do your chucks eat the leaves, flowers or both? I have a pot of this for the cats, guess I didn't think of it as a lizard treat...

Both, but mostly the leaves. With chucks the taste for mints seems to vary. The chuck I took care of at college went nuts for catnip and pretty much any mint. Of my two, Rigel will eat it but its not a favorite and Gracie seems to pick aroud it.

the uros will not touch the stuff.

Definitely try some hibiscus. My female uro loves fresh hibiscus flowers more then anything else in the world.
