Thayeri Questions

Geckofanatic23 Feb 11, 2007 10:40 AM

Hey everyone, I'm a newb to thayeri with a few question. I'm looking at getting a new kingsnake in about a month. I was planning on a gray band or cal king, but then I remembered these guys. Where I'm going to be purchasing my snake, they have nuevo leonis and san luis potosi kingnsakes. Are these a kind of theyeri, or something else? Also, i can't find a good caresheet. I know the basic setup, but could someone please fill me in on tank size and temps? Thanks a bunch for any help!

Nuevo leon kingsnakes or variable kingsnakes are all names used for thayeri thayeri. The proper name is "lampropeltis mexicana thayeri". There are three primary phase's of thayeri, The milk snake phase the leonis phase and the melanistic phase. The milk snake phase and leonis phases are pictured.

The San luis potosi kingsnake is what we commonly call mex-mex. That name comes from its proper name "lampropeltis mexicana mexicana". I'm sure someone will post a pic of a mex mex and maybe a melanistic.

Hope this helps.

What size tank would you suggest for an adult? Do they require different temps than other kingsnakes? Thanks!

If using a glass type tank a 20-30 gal would work fine. As far as temps, if you can offer a gradient between 65-85 and let them choose what they want, is ideal.

Choose carefully when buying thayeri. Several people on this forum have bought "thayeri" that were not thayeri or only part thayeri. Your initial questions have aroused my curiosity.

Drool, drool, drool! Man, I want a pair of those sooo bad.
I'm on the Pottstown Reptiles waiting list for a pair, I've got my fingers crossed that it pans out. Thanks for the pics.
