Mating Ritual

stevereecy Feb 11, 2007 12:54 PM

So today, I was watching television with the collards off to the side and my wife says "Look!". And I caught the tail end of a scrap of some kind. But then it ended as quick as it began and they were all buddy buddy. I asked her what happened, and she told me that male tried to bite the female on the shoulder. I was explaining that this could be a mating behavior and then the male, who was sitting on a big circular rock, starts dragging his pelvis, and goes around the rock in two large circles. Bingo! Thats what it is. Later, he does it again, dragging around the female.

Looks like he's interested, but she isn't (yet). I'm guessing it might be because they are getting proper hot temps for the first time in a long time, and we are running longers "days" since we leave their lights on more than 12 hours.

So, how long can she really hope to fend him off? And if he successfully, "does the deed", how long would it be before they lay.

I told me wife we would be unbelieveably lucky if we bought two animals blind from a vendor, and had them mate within a short amount of time like this.

Lol, well Steve "fending off" can go for a very longtime, Bonnie has been fending off Clyde since we got them. Now the female will get her mating colours sometime soon, nice orange to red bars will develop along her stomach. She will be more receptive then but again it's hit and miss. Bonnie has shown that she was pregnant last year but no eggs were produced.

As far as time from "doing the deed" to laying the eggs I am not too sure.
