Nyoka drops a bundle!!!!!!

StrikingSerpents Feb 11, 2007 01:29 PM

On day 26 after her prelay shed Nyoka layed a nice pile of eggs. Here she is doing the mommmy thing...

After candling them it looks like about 20 eggs and all are fertile including the one straggler she left out...

The sire to this clutch was our Spitfire male, Sonny.

Congrats! I am hoping to experience the same feeling soon. I have a couple questions tho. Did you witness the copulation, and do you have a ballpark figure of the time space between the last "locking" you witnessed and the pre-lay shed? And did your female feed while you were breeding her. One of my females (a jcp tho) has locked up with one my males at least half a dozen times for hours. I have not seen her ovulate yet. Its been about a month since I witnessed her and the male locked up for the first time, and I have caught them a few more times. And she is still feeding. So do I need to be patient and wait longer for her to ovulate? OR should I give up hope and wait till next season? Thanks for any info and congrats!

We don't feed females during the breeding season but many other breeders do. They ussually stop breeding a 2-3 weeks before ovulation. You need to watch your female closely to witness ovulation. After ovulation she will shed about 2 weeks later. After shedding she will lay eggs 20-30 days later.

It sounds like your male is doing a great job. Just keep the male with the female until ovulation. Females will ussually stop eating just before ovulation but some will continue to eat all the way up to egg laying. I would stop feeding after the prelay shed.

So say they have been breeding from mid January to now. It wouldnt be abnormal for her to ovulate not until another month. They just bred about 5 days ago and I seperated them yesterday. I plan to reintoduce them to one another in 3 more days. I guess I may just be impatient cuz she is still pounding rats, and has been breeding for the past month, and I see no sign of ovulation or her not eating. I guess all I can do is keep at it until I notice something. Is it common for breeders to witness copulation in January and then notice ovulation in say March or something? I am just real confused on the time span between copulation, and ovulation.
