rodents & roaches, please help!?

killr_silhouette Feb 11, 2007 05:34 PM

does anyone know where i can get decently priced frozen rodents shipped to pa?...i only have 2 small boas and a cornsnake, as well as a baby tegu...

so theres really no point in me spending hundreds of dollars on mice and rats, when by the time i use half of them, my snakes will be ready for a larger size...and the shipping rates for frozen rodents are sky-high!

i've already looked into rodentpro & micedirect...but like i said...i dont need THAT many mice...and my only alternative around here is to go to petco and spend upwards of $1.50 per mouse...which isnt good either...

i forgot about the roaches!...lol

does anyone know about breeding roaches?...i have a tegu, a leopard gecko and a leopard toad...would they be able to eat roaches?

is it a good idea to try to breed roaches?...how difficult is it?...how many offspring do they produce? which species of roach would be the best feeder?

what should i feed the roaches to ensure they will be the best quality for my reptiles?

where is a good place to buy breeder roaches from?

thanks!
jessica

Where in PA are you? I drive an hour to a show once a month, because I figured it out that even after paying gas & admission, it's cheaper for me to buy mice locally than it is to order online.
Find a show that's close to you if you're only buying for that amount of animals. If you go to the Pittsburgh & Mars shows, you can normally get adult mice for about $.50 each. Every once in a while vendors have sales on specific things. I stock up when they do this- my last stocking was large rats at $1 each.

i live in northwestern pa (erie)...so i guess the closest show near me is the one in cleveland...but im not sure when that show is happening again...any ideas?

thanks for the reply!

Looks like it's next weekend.

Dunno what any of the prices would be there, though. Don't want you to go to the show only planning on getting rodents to find out that they're more expensive than online, or to find that they don't have any.
But, if you're wanting to check out the show anyway, I'd give it a shot before buying elsewhere.

Just a couple of thoughts:
1) Even if you just order one bag of mice, with shipping it's still like 40% cheaper than what you're paying at the pet shop.
2) What's your time worth? Is it worth $35 to save 10-20 trips to the pet shop?
3) Do you know anyone else in the area who keeps herps and could split a shipment?
