My first leopard gecko

chicsox3035 Feb 11, 2007 08:00 PM

I got my first leopard gecko today from Petco. I believe it is a carrot tail. I had a few geckos before in the White Lined Gecko but got rid of them since they were so skittish and running all the time. I am excited and eventually will get a partner for this gecko.

Please explain "got rid of them". How?

Please realize that handle-ability is based largely on your interaction with the geckos. Time and patience is key. Without proper interaction, a leopard gecko can be as skittish as a gold gecko or as feisty as a tokay.

Why?

Did you have a question and I missed it? You didn't post a picture otherwise I would be assuming you are asking if it is a carrot tail or not. Many morphs have some orange color at the base of the tail. The amount and quality of the coloring determines whether it is a carrot tail, although I admit I do not entirely understand the rhyme or reason and suspect it is entirely subjective.

I just let them go in my backyard. No, of course I got rid them in an appropriate manner. I took them back to the pet store. White Line Geckos are always skittish you can't change that, when I would try to go in there and clean their tank they would run around the sides of the tank. I have no camera otherwise I would post a pic, but when I go home then I will. There was no question.

Ok, well i have to disagree about white lined geckos being too skittish because my buddy owns 2 and they will chillon your shoulders for a while, he handles them everyday. So like sleepy said it would have to be time and patience spent with them. I also am hoping your not thinking that leos need a friend. They do better soley on there own and you are not to house any 2 herps together. It stresses them out heavily! Congrats on the new leo. What is your setup? Temps? Substrate? Heating? Lighting? How big is your setup? What are you feeding? Do you have a calcuim dish? You didn't really say much about you or your leo. SOme info would be awesome!

Well first to answer ur question I never said that geckos needed a friend. So whatever but I saw this guy being sold as a baby leo at the petco and like his coloring so I thought I would do him a favor by taking him out of that store where there were like 6 baby leos in a 12 inch tank long. So no need to take some low blows at me. This tank is like 3 feet long. Calcium is provided. Dust his crickets, bought some worms but he doesnt like them and hasnt eaten one so maybe it will just take time. Water dish, humid hide are provided. He is in my dorm room so the heat is always on and like around 80 during the day and maybe 70-75 at night. He is real cool and loves to be handled, just chills on my hand. Compared to my white lined geckos that i got from a different store they were adults and would freak out when i tried to clean their tanks like 15 times when i had them. So they never changed and always threw a fit, so i moved on and got rid of them in an appropriate manner. He looks much thicker now especially his tail compared to what it was 2 weeks ago. So he has some cool coloring and only cost me 20 bucks so its worth it to me. I said i only have 1 gecko so that means there arent 2 in there. Maybe in like 3 months will get it a partner but not right now. There is no substrate but have been thinking about putting some paper towels in there but he seems cool without some towels. I clean his tank daily so the feces arent in there. Hes cool and sometimes acts weird like he screeched when i tried to move him to take his feces out. These things sometimes have a mind of their own. He eats too much imo. Like 2 or 3 crickets are gone in 2 days after i put some in.
