jloganafcc Feb 11, 2007 08:14 PM

i have a barrs (herpcages.com) cage that is 3Lx2Wx1H i was thiking about setting it up with multiple hides, and i was wanting to know if this would be adequete space for a 1.5 group of adult leos.

there will be multiple hides, and basking spots.

and an egg chamber...

these are more pets than breeding project. but babeis would be neat.

any thoughts?

you want to house SIX leos in a 3x2x1 space?

that is barely adequate for a pair, IMO. Leos will use every inch of their cage, if they're stress-free and healthy. They really are better off living singly, and not in groups. Females will attack and injure each other, the male will breed them all regardless of whether or not they're healthy and of breeding weight... and what if one of your leos is sick? How will you know who's eating, and who's pooping?

Are you prepared to deal with the extra time it takes to monitor all those leos for stress and injuries? What will you do if one of the geckos infects the rest with coccidia, or some other parasite? What are you going to do when each of those 5 females lays upwards of 20 eggs a season (that's 100 baby geckos, and it's possible for your females to lay more)?

Man, I'm glad somebody else said it. I get tired of being the one that says, "Do you have a plan for all those babies," and "How are you going to prevent fights?" and "Quarantine new animals," and "Females can fight too, just house them separately."

So, to the original poster, consider my post 1 to the first opinion you got, including the cage size - my understanding was that 20 gallons was theoretically enough for a pair (though that would be the bare minimum), and a 20 gallon long is 2.5x1x1 = 2.5 square feet of cage floor. 3x2x1 is 6 square feet, or 2.4x that space for 3x the geckos, so yeah, that's probably too small for 6 geckos.
