New Glades Enclosure...DUW!

viborero Feb 11, 2007 11:06 PM

Just a little something I put together for my little Glades. I wanted something that gives them a chance to expand their arboreal capabilities. I know it won't hold them for long, but I want to experience their color change in a nicer setting than a tub.

And their last moments in the tubs:

Little guy exploring his new home:

Thanks for looking!

Hi,

I really want to make a natural setup like that for my black rat (6 months old). She has had some serious shedding issues on the aspen, and still sheds in pieces with the moist hide I put in (that she uses a lot). Her shed problems weren't resolved by the many long soaking sessions I put her through as recommended by some posts on this forum.

The only concern I have is scale rot. I'm considering either moistened repti-bark or trying out the soil system from "the art of keeping snakes"... but then I don't want to make her skin irritated.

What are your thoughts on that? I tried searching the forums, but I really didn't find anything. If you think I should go for it, how damp is too damp? Would soil or repti-bark prevent her from burrowing (which she likes)?

Anyone have any experience with black rats and dampened substrates? I would really appreciate any advice.

viborero Feb 12, 2007 03:49 PM

Shedding problems could be signs of other, more serious issues. If humidity alone isn't enough, then you might want to take your snake in for an evaluation. Sometimes heavy parasite loads or other maladies can be causes. Also, feeding prey items too small can affect shedding.

As far as the set-up, I took the easy way and left the plant in the pot. That way I can take it out for watring, pruning , and general enclosure maintenance. For substrate, I used Bed-a-Beast. Just hydrate it, squeeze out the excess water, and you're good to go. To maintain it moist, but not wet, just spray it down a few times a week.

Good luck!

So, moist (but not wet) substrate like Bedabeast or Repti-bark definitely won't hurt them? Thanks - Oleg
