Female Bearded Dragons

SamWaters Feb 12, 2007 01:23 AM

I have been researching beardies and I plan to get one at the next reptile show in my area (March). One question I haven't found an answer for is: do female beardies lay eggs even if they haven't been fertilized? I know turtles do that but I don't know about dragons. Do female bearded dragons that are never bred make for rewarding pets?

I have always had male reptiles, not by design it just happened that way, and I don't know if I will need special accomodations if I choose a female.

Thanks.

They most certainly do, and it's important that you keep an egg-laying box nearby for her to do just that, otherwise she can become egg-bound and possibly die from it. You'll get used to recognizing the signs she is looking to lay, restlessness, heavier than normal, buldging in her stomach, her scratching into the soil/sand/substrate nose-first.

Also, you'll want to keep her calcium intake up as much as possible, as they expend a lot of it producing the eggs.

well nuts. can females be safely spayed by a vet the same as a dog? what is best for a happy lizard (and owner)?

My last pet was a savanna monitor that passed away last year due to kidney failure complicated by seniority. He was also a little handicapped but a 100% delightful pet for 8 1/2 years. I'm not afraid of hard work to take care of an animal, I just know lots of females die from egg-binding and I'm not ready for more heartbreak.

Thanks.

Atleast I'm going to assume so since I once as a female bearded dragon up for adoption who was spayed. She was egg bound and owners no longer wanted her. And also they can spay/neuter rats so Beardies shouldn't be a problem. I'd just make sure to get it done by a reptile experienced vet as healing's a little diffrent from mammals (they whole scales and shedding thing)...
It might cost a little extra than comapred to mammals.
