anyone know about this snake?

kurtangle Feb 12, 2007 06:37 AM

Does anyone know the species of this rat snake?
This snake belong to a friend of mine and the seller told him this is an european rat snake, is that true?
I had checked online but I could not find any similar pattern like this of an european rat snake.
Could anyone tell me? I am so sorry that this is the best photo I got.

Thanks~

Kurt:
As answered previously your snake looks like Elaphe schrencki. It's not from Europe but rather from the very farthest east in Asia. It is native to the Amur River valley in Russia and also adjacent areas of Korea and China. It's actually a very good ratsnake for hobbyists. It's a relatively calm, relatively easy-keeping animal that is interesting and attractive. It's not small and it can eat alot. But it's one of my favorites. I've included photos of a hatchling and an adult.

John

I picked up my first pair of Russians last year.
They are a very cool pet snake!

Your friend got a great deal. Russians are one of the best rat snakes there are IMHO. Wonderful snakes.

I remember many years ago at the "International Reptile Expo" in Orlando,FL. there was a "two-headed" one there,......the guy had a $10,000 dollar sticker on it!!,......yeah...right!!! that's a pretty expensive "conversation piece", since it was just a "fluke", and cannot be perpetuated!!................Doug
